Technical Tips and General Operating Instructions

Greater benefits with the self-contained automatic greasing systems

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR ALL AGS UNITS
  1. Grease bearing with manual grease gun
  2. Unscrew greasing nipple
  3. Remove outlet plug
  4. Screw on AGS greasing unit
  5. Click ON switch

PRESSURE BUILD-UP OPTIONS

After activation, greasing units require a certain set-up time to allow pressure to build up behind the piston. Greasing starts after correct pressure is reached. Pressure will be maintained even if the unit is switched off for a time. When the unit is switched on again, greasing starts immediately with existing pressure. Simply set the desired running time and mount the greasing unit.

There are 2 options to chose from. The first is the slower way and is linked to the total greasing period that is scheduled. The table below indicates the pressure build-up times.

Time Setting in months 1 2 3 6 12 18
Dip switch 1 2 3 4 5 6
Pressure build-up in days 1 2 3 6 10 14

QUICK OPTION

If immediate greasing is desired, set all dip switches to the ON position. Pressure build-up time will be approximately 6-8 hours. Afterwards, click switches to the desired settings. (See Lubrication Options table below.)

TECHNICAL TIPS

A few points to remember:

  • Before mounting any greasing unit, always lightly grease the nipple manually to de-clog the bearing. This procedure will ensure that the greasing unit can dispense the grease correctly.
  • It is possible to add extension hoses for both grease and oil lubricators. With grease, the hose or ID tubing should not exceed 5 feet (1.5 meters). With oil, the maximum distance is 16 feet (5 meters). The recommended internal diameter of the tubing or hoses is  1/4" - 1/3" (6-8 mm). Before starting, fill grease or oil in the hoses or tubes.
  • The upper temperature range or usage is approx. 150ºF (65ºC) - except for the Low-Cost Unit which is 104ºF (40ºC). If ambient temperatures are higher than this, use a tube extension to increase the distance from the heat source.
  • One greasing unit is recommended for each nipple but it is possible to use two greasing units over a T-joint for larger greasing requirements.
  • The AGS automatic lubricators grease constantly -- no pulse greasing. If lubricating with oil, timing should be increased by about 40% because of decreased line resistance. A check-valve of 0.2 bar is recommended.

BATTERY CAPACITY

There is never any risk of the battery going flat before the unit is empty. Below are the details of the battery capacity and use over a year.

Approximate battery capacity =     2400 milli-Amp

Consumption over 1 year

     25 micro-Amp. x 8640 hrs         =      216 milli-Amp

Indicator light:

     8 micro-Amp. x 8640 hrs           =       69 milli-Amp

Yearly consumption rate             =       285 milli-Amp

leaving over 80% reserve capacity

SYNCHRONIZATION WITH RUNNING MACHINE

It is easy to connect the AGS 125 or EM units with a running machine. Simply put the unit in start-up position (steps 1 to 5 above). Then extend the wire and connect it with the machine switchboard or power relay with a non-electrical contact. When the machine is running, the unit will lubricate. When the machine is turned off, the unit will stop.

VOLUME COMPARISONS

30 day period = 4 cc / day equivalent to 4 manual grease gun discharges
60 day period = 2.1 cc / day equivalent to 2 manual grease gun discharges
90 day period = 1.3 cc / day equivalent to 1 1/3 manual grease gun discharges
180 day period = 0.7 cc / day equivalent to 1/2 manual grease gun discharge
360 day period = 0.35 cc / day equivalent to 1/3 manual grease gun discharge

This table compares manual greasing to automatic greasing over different intervals:

Daily 3-4 manual grease gun discharges = 30 day period of AGS greasing unit
Every 2-3 days 3-4 manual grease gun discharges =

60 day period of AGS greasing unit

Weekly 8-10 manual grease gun discharges =

90 day period of AGS greasing unit

Every 14 days 8-10 manual grease gun discharges =

180 day period of AGS greasing unit

Monthly 8-10 manual grease gun discharges =

360 day period of AGS greasing unit
